What Lives Do We Want To Build?

‘Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, “This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.” …In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.’ (Luke 14:28-30,33)

As we enter the new year, what lives do we want to build? How do we want to grow as followers of Jesus? We may have big ideas about all the things we want to accomplish and all the ways we want to grow, but we may also be concerned that we don’t have what it takes (resources, time, self-control...) to pull it off. In the passage above, Jesus calls us to give up ‘everything we have’ for what needs to be built in our lives, but it's so easy to fear that we don’t have what it takes to endure until we are fully built. The good news is that he can complete what he wants to build in us without us being intelligent, competent, wealthy, or even physically healthy.
